Maharashtra FDA Suspends Food License of Blinkit Dark Store in Pune
Maharashtra’s FDA has suspended Blinkit’s food license in Pune’s Balewadi area due to regulatory non-compliance. An investigation revealed the facility lacked the necessary Food Safety and Standards Authority of India license for food production, distribution, and sales. The facility also violated food safety measures, with items found on the floor and missing pest control audits.
This comes after the authorities stepped up surveillance of dark stores amid concerns around food safety and hygiene in these facilities.

What Happened at the Blinkit Store in Pune?
On June 5, 2025, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a stop-business notice to a Blinkit dark store located in Balewadi, Pune. The action was taken against Energy Darkstore Services Pvt Ltd, which operates this particular store for Blinkit.
Key Reasons for the Suspension:
- Operating without a valid FSSAI license (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India)
- Incomplete or missing food safety documentation
- Poor hygiene and safety conditions
FDA's Inspection Findings: Shocking Hygiene Lapses
- Food packets stored directly on the floor, which increases contamination risks
- Dust-laden racks and improperly cleaned storage spaces
- Pest-control documentation missing or expired
- Cold storage units not calibrated properly
- Unhygienic environment with food debris on the floor
- Employees working without hairnets or protective gear
Regulatory Requirements Ignored
- A valid FSSAI license
- Basic sanitary and hygiene certificates
- Records of regular pest control and maintenance
- Proof of cold chain compliance for perishable items
Not an Isolated Case: FDA Crackdown on Quick Commerce
This isn’t the first time a quick-commerce platform has faced regulatory heat. Just a few days before, Zepto’s facility in Dharavi, Mumbai, was similarly suspended for non-compliance. The FDA is now inspecting other dark stores across Pune to ensure they meet basic safety and regulatory standards.
Industry Impact: Time for Quick Commerce 2.0?
This incident could be a turning point for India’s quick commerce industry. It sends a strong message:
- Regulatory compliance is non-negotiable
- Dark store operations must prioritize food safety
- Brands must invest in training, audits, and certifications
It’s time for the industry to evolve from speed-first to safe-first delivery.
Following this, the facility’s food business license was suspended until the required license under Section 31 (1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, is obtained.
Despite the lack of a license, the Blinkit facility, operated by M/s Energy Darkstore Services near Mitcon College in Balewadi, was storing and selling food items.
